Eldora Mountain Resort Project Overview

Eldora Mountain Resort (Eldora) is located on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland (ARP) in Boulder County, Colorado and operates in accordance with the terms and conditions of a Special Use Permit, which is administered by the United States Forest Service. Eldora has submitted a proposal to the ARP, which comprises approximately 70 acres of new lift-served traditional terrain and approximately 70 acres of new gladed terrain. The terrain would be accessed by two new lifts: one on the front side – the Jolly Jug lift – and one on the back side – the Placer lift. To improve access onto the mountain and circulation throughout the resort, the replacement of the Corona and Challenge lifts is also proposed (the proposed Challenge lift would replace the existing Challenge and Cannonball lifts with one improved lift). Snowmaking coverage is proposed on all new traditional trails, excluding the gladed terrain, totaling approximately 70 acres. In addition, trail widening is proposed on four popular existing trails which are currently limited by their width, producing inefficient bottlenecks on the back side of the resort. Finally, the remodel of The Lookout facility and the construction of a new on-mountain facility at the top of Challenge Mountain are proposed to better accommodate guests’ needs and expectations. With the development of the proposed projects, the Comfortable Carrying Capacity (CCC) at Eldora would increase by 1,410 guests, from 4,250 to 5,660 guests. A Forest Plan Amendment is proposed to adjust the current SUP boundary.

The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to consider and disclose the anticipated environmental effects of implementing select projects from the 2011 Master Plan for Eldora Mountain Resort (Eldora). Through the identification of opportunities and constraints at the ski area, the proposed projects are designed to allow Eldora to meet guest expectations for a safe, quality, recreational experience by providing appropriate lifts, terrain, and guest services at the resort.
